T2 – 1.7 Making the Environment Safe

Safety Planning: Making the Environment Safe

  • Depending on the suicide risk of the patient, the safety plan may also include ways to make the patient’s environment safe.
    • Typically applies to patients who exhibit detailed suicidal ideation, plan, behavior, or attempts.
  • Can include removing items from the home (e.g., giving one’s gun to a trusted family member) or making adjustments to the home (e.g., locking cabinets that contain prescription pills).
  • Can include involving trusted individuals to assist in making the environment safe (e.g., asking a spouse to remove alcohol from the home).
