Who is at Higher Risk for Elder Abuse?

  • Abuse can happen to any older adult, but there are some factors that may increase an elder’s risk of abuse, including:
    • Not having family or friends nearby.
    • Having a physical or medical disability that requires someone to be dependent on another to meet their basic needs.
    • Having memory problems or dementia.
  • Mistreatment most often affects those who depend on others with activities of everyday life (e.g., bathing, dressing, taking medicine).
