1.9 Abuse Affecting Safety and Health

Abuse Affecting Safety and Health

  • Abuse can affect the patient’s safety and health, involving a variety of factors:
    • A risk of suicide.
    • Safety and psychosocial ramifications such as fear of being blamed for the abuse or fear of being removed from the home, and other consequences, such as posttraumatic stress disorder.
  • Child abuse is an adverse childhood experience.
    • These experiences have been linked to a variety of long-term health consequences. Thus, the medical provider should include a comprehensive risk assessment as part of the medical history.
