High Risk of Abuse in the Elderly

Older individuals are at a greater risk of abuse due to social isolation, cognitive impairment, physical limitations to experience.

Types of abuse:

  1. Violent Crime, a crime in which an offender uses or threaten to use force resulting in murder, rape, robbery or assault.

     

  2. Neglect, failure to provide an older person with important needs such as adequate food, water, medicine or safety.

     

  3. Exploitation, including financial fraud (fiduciary abuse), taking advantage of an elderly person by another person or caregiver for monetary, personal or other benefit, gain or profit.
